Embedding YouTube viewer, what's up with this?

Recently, whenever I view a page with a Youtube viewer (not just the link, the whole player) I notice that the player is trying to open/play the video. This might be OK should I want to view the video but it sure slows down the loading of the page whether I want to see it or not.
If others are also experiencing this, maybe just a link to the site would be better suited instead of linking the entire video player.
