I'm pleased to announce that our colleagues, MikeB and rhp335,
have graciously agreed to serve as our BGC technical support team.

Plans are now being made for a dedicated, multi-threaded tech support
forum. In the meantime, however, BGC members should post their tech
support questions here, so that Mike or Randy may respond to them.

Thanks!

Mike Randy...
Do you construe " The Sad " post ..referring to the place/guy/that gave AJ so much trouble..as a fuse waiting to get lit?
With respect to Mark and the other Forum...should it be discussed on the main board?
All due respect to NickD and my fellow amputees.

Yes I have a question too.

You know how you can disable those 'smilies' in a thread....Well is there any way you can advise us on how to disable Winky's perpetual smilie avatar?

(But by all means, take care of the other crack first. )

Greg,

Mike and Randy will be working on "technical" issues, not "editorial" ones,
which will remain my responsibility. I'm sure they'll have their hands full
with the former without having to worry about the latter.

To answer your question, my preference is that the subject of which you
speak NOT be raised here. But, at the same time, I am hesitant to
"censor" legitimate discussions on topics of general interest to the
membership.

That being said, however, there has been NO change in the basic policies
of this board. So, if any post or discussion here veers over the line of
what I consider to be minimally-acceptable behavior, then I will not
hesitate to take whatever steps I deem necessary to maintain the
integrity of the BGC and its members. Such steps may include "trimming"
the offensive content from the board and/or re-evaluating the
membership status of anyone responsible for it.

Winky - both Mike and I make use of subcontractors when needed. I think your situation needs to be addressed by these gentlemen:

Greg - I asked your opinion on censorship over on the main board, I'd love your opinion.

Strato - One of my chief goals as a technologist is to rid the Internet of those friggin' happy faces, but it's a long hard fight

Keep in mind that anything posted here in the "Good Morning" forum can be read by anyone at any time who surfs in here without being a registered member of the BGC....."GMGM" doesn't have a bouncer at the door

Just FYI, I have twice today had clicking on a link result in the download of a file called:

viewtopic-1.php.download

This is what was happening right before the darkness came.

Gingerly - What you saw is a hiccup in the BGC server's technology stack. The Cavern is dependent on three pieces of software on our server - the Apache web server, a MySQL database, and a scripting language called PHP. If you take a look at the URLs in various forum pages, you'll see that most of the pages have the file extension .php. What happens in our forum is that when you click a link with a .php extension, the Apache web server calls the PHP scripting language to execute various actions, in our case it's to retrieve information from the database (existing posts and user information) and to insert information into the database (new posts). If for any reason there's a hiccup in PHP, the Apache server will do what comes naturally for any web server, in other words, try to send you whatever file is in the link (in your case the PHP script file). Since you probably don't have PHP installed on your computer, your browser is just going to ask you if you want to download the file. Clearing your cache will likely clear up the problem on your end.

We aren't really running against any limitations here, the way we would be on other types of bulletin boards that we may have experiences with in the past. The Cavern runs against a pretty robust database, and we're nowhere near any quota limits on our hosting side. We aren't going to get anything like "five nines" availability though - not at the price point we're at. If we get 99% availability we're still going to have over 3 1/2 days of downtime ever year (99% x 365 days!). Even if we get 99.9% availability, we're still subject to 15 hours a year of downtime. There are occasional hiccups, processes dying, plus browser quirks that add up to scary symptoms if you're not familiar with the way the technology stack works. We've found pretty good response from our contacts at the hosting service - when there's a hiccup they're usually on the problem by the time we get hold of them, and their fix time has usually been quite reasonable considering the service levels they're obligated to. Rest assured that I am keeping an eye on the board as much as possible, and if there's a significant problem, the membership will get an e-mail about it.

I've worked up a status page on my personal web site that automatically checks to see if the Cavern's services are live (although because of the way that PHP works I won't necessarily be able to check that remotely). We'll be asking some folks soon to take a look at it and comment, and once we're ready to go, we'll publish it so that if there is a hiccup you'll be able to see what's wrong (if anything) with the Cavern and when things are back up and running. Testing's still in progress...
