I suspect that our hosting service has made some changes yet again to our server. For the last day and a half it's been fine, and the performance is back up to what I consider acceptable.
I strongly suspect that there was a change made to our server last month that utterly clobbered our performance. Since I don't have console access, I could only take a SWAG at what it might've been. The hosting guys were blaming our database access and long running queries for the performance issues, which was completely bogus in my eyes. We don't run transaction processing on this server and the overwhelming majority of what we do on the board are reads, not writes. Writes take up much more overhead than reads as you can guess, but not all that much for what we're doing. If we have a write once a minute that's a lot for this board.
I suspect that they've either rolled back whatever change they made or fixed said change. Hopefully that's the end of our recent performance issues. Heaven knows I complain enough to them...
